Morning showers faded away as the afternoon and evening skies cleared to make for a great night of racing action at Wayne County Speedway Saturday night as all four class’ of cars would see early leaders not able to hang on for the wins. In the Malcuit Tavern Super Late Model feature, Tyler Thompson would grab the lead at the drop of the green flag with Kyle Lukon in his tire tracks. Coming out of turn four, Lukon would edge past Thompson for the lead to complete lap 3 but Thompson said not so fast and returned the favor on the next circuit. Larry Bellman would bring out the caution on lap five and on the restart, Mitch Caskey slid into second and set his sights on Thompson, who would continue to set the pace until lap 18 when Caskey went low in turn four and powered his way into the lead. Thompson would keep the pressure on Caskey for the lead but on lap 23 would hit some debris on the track and went pitside to have his car checked out and returned to the race. This put J R Gentry into second after recovering from a lap 13 spin. In the final two laps, Caskey and his Orrville based, Dan Weaver Trucking, JOYRIDE Transport and Millersburg Tire #18 kept Gentry in second as Gentry’s run out of turn four came up short at the finish line. Lukon, who is the 3rd driver to drive the #co2 car, finished third follwed by Ryan Markham and Wes Morrison. Heat winners were Thompson and Lukon.
Bill Griffith and Bruce Miller brought the Corbon Ammunition Modifieds feature to the grren flag with Griffith grabbing the point for the first lap as 4th starting Jason King took over for the next three circuits. After a lap 4 red flag for Tristan Bickford and Casey Butler getting hooked together and blocking the track, King and Griffith dueled for the lead on the restart and as they did, Mansfield’s Kyle Moore overpowered both coming out of turn four to take the top spot. Moore held off Griffith until the red flag waved on lap 16 when T A Perrine jumped the cushion in turn two and went flying into the back stretch tires ending up on his top. He would be ok. Moore and his Arnold Motorsports, Kepling Floors and Moore Brothers Racing #1* would pull away in the final laps for his fifth straight win. Colton Shaw edged past Griffith on the last lap for second as King and Miller filled out the top five. Moore and Griffith topped the heats
Pole sitter Jimmy Humphrey grabbed the point of the McKenzie Concrete Super Stock main with 4th starting Tyler Wiles quickly taking second and as they passed the flagstand on lap two, made contact with Humphrey making contact with the frontstretch wall but bouncing off of it and kept the lead as Wiles gathered his car back under control as Chase Alexander would sneak by Wiles for second. Alexander, of Wooster, motored past Humphrey on the next lap for the lead as Wiles took second from Humphrey. At the halfway mark, Kyle Moore moved into third as Alaxander and Wiles dueled for the lead. With six laps to go, Moore took over second and as the laps wound down, Alexander and his Dana;s Danes, Peter’s Chocolate Shop and CSR Masonary #15 kept Moore at bay to capture his third win of the season. Colton Longwell finished third in his first visit to WCS with Humphrey taking fourth and points leader Don Rutt ending up fifth as Wiles pulled off on the final lap. Heat winners were Humphrey and Moore.
Like the other 3 features where it didn’t pay to be the early leader, it was the same way for the JOYRIDE Transport Mini Stocks as Jordan James jumped into the point from his 4th starting position before the first lap was completed with Billy Parsons, Ryan Carder and Johnny Bruce in pursuit follwed by Brad and Doug Hensel. As Carder and Parsons battled for second, Brad Hensel was on the move and took second on lap seven. Disaster would strike James on lap 11 when a rear tire snapped off forcing him to the pits as Smithville’s Brad Hensel and his NewFast Motorsports #18 inherited the lead and held off Johnny Bruce in the last four laps for his 1st win of the season. Carder hung on to third followed by Doug Hensel and Parsons. Claiming the heat wins were Bruce and David Keagy.
Drivers were all chasing after the O’Reilly’s Auto Parts ‘Race to the Championship’ points along with the Contingency Connection’s ‘Racers Rewards’ prizes.
Next Saturday night, June 26th will be Mid Season championships with double points for all five class’.
