Perigo Sweeps BOSS Doubleheader Weekend

5 min read

To “sweep” the night in an MPD Racing BOSS event is no easy task. That means you have quick timed your group, then won the heat from the fourth starting spot AND won the 25 lap main event. For the first time in tour history, the first 3 events of the season have been swept. Carmen Perigo, “The Stoystown Streak” from Stoystown, Pennsylvania backed up his performance opening night at Ohio Valley Speedway on April 21 by dominating this weekend’s programs at Hilltop Speedway on Friday night and at Wayne County Speedway on Saturday night.

Track promoters Tyler Evans and Jason Flory gave the BOSS teams absolutely fantastic racing surfaces both nights. Friday at Hilltop, it was Oxnard, California’s Ricky Lewis seting overall quick time, being the only driver under the 14 second mark with a lap of 13.894 over a 22 car field. Cody Gardner and Perigo also were quickest in their heat groups. Heat races were won by Gardner, Parker Frederickson and Perigo.
The 25 lap main event saw Perigo and Joey Amantea on the front row at the drop of the green. But the show early was Wilmington, Ohio’s Cody Gardner who went from his 5th starting spot to lead lap one. He then began to open a big lead, carrying the front wheels down both straights nearly every lap. The race stayed clean and green until lap 12 when the first of 3 yellows flew. The restart saw Amantea and Perigo closed in on Gardner and beginning to challenge for the lead.

As the race wore on, Perigo got the high side of the race track working and was able to get around Gardner on lap 20. At the line, it was Perigo, Gardner, Isaac Chapple, Ricky Lewis and a fading Joey Amantea hanging on to complete the top 5.

On Saturday, 25 cars were signed in to face another VERY well prepared race track. Parker Frederickson was overall fastest qualifier leading group 1 with a 17.378 with Paul Dues and Perigo also quick timing their groups. Frederickson, Isaac Chapple and Perigo won their heat races. The 10 lap B-Main was on by Greenville’s Matt Cooley.

The 25 lap main event found defending tour champion Isaac Chapple on the pole with Perigo alongside. Chapple would lead early on with Perigo, Frederickson and 8th starting Korbyn Hayslett battling up front. On this night, all eyes were on 13th starting Ricky Lewis as he worked his way to the lead by lap 15. Over the next 9 laps, no less than three caution flags would slow the field, erasing a 2 second lead. The final caution flew on lap 24 setting up a one lap shootout for the win.

On the final restart, Lewis thundered into turn one as Perigo threw the slider bomb to steal the lead. Lewis crossed over and ran Perigo into turn 3 as hard as anyone could. With the cars virtually touching one another, the pair slid all the way to the Wayne County Speedway outside guardrail off turn 4. It was Perigo, showing the kid half his age, that double the age means double the bravado as the Stoystown Streak stood on the loud pedal, inches from disaster, beating Lewis back to the line to stay perfect on the season!

Lewis, understandably disappointed, gave a great post race intervie along with the winner with both drivers giving one another praise in what was another classic BOSS finish at Wayne County Speedway. The duo got a thunderous applause from the fans. Not to be lost in the excitement, Korbyn Hayslett had another great night finishing third with Trey Jacobs crossing over from the FAST On Dirt winged side to represent with a great run from 12th to finish 4th and Dustin Ingle rounded out the top 5.

Next up for the BOSS tour will be another great doubleheader weekend with another first time race track. The tour will make its first ever stop at the new Circle City Raceway near Indianapolis, Indiana on Friday, May 19, then moving on to the always exciting Montpelier Motor Speedway on Saturday, May 20.
