Senic, Yokum and Hay take extra money from Elkins

(Kerens, W.V. 6-1-13) It was a triple header of extra payouts for a near packed pit area Friday night as 84 cars plus 11 Mini Wedges signed into Elkins Raceway.

Headlining the evening was the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models with the Hunter’s Haven $2,000 to win 25 lapper. Chuck Harper, Tim Senic and Butch McGill scored the prelim honors. Harper and Senic dragged raced to turn one as Senic gained the advantage. With only two yellows slowing action for the first 23 circuits, Senic smoothly drove around the 3/8 oval, as Harper couldn’t get close enough to make a bid for the spot. The final stoppage came out with just two go rounds left. On the restart Harper dove under Senic in turns one and two, but could not make it stick. The Roy’s RV Super Center / Schaeffer Oil #S2 collected his first checkerboard of the season. Harper had to settle for second. Paul Wilmoth Jr., Cody Hardesty and Bob Gordon rounded out the top five.

The Miller’s Used Cars Street Stocks had former Street Stock driver (now driving a Modified) Randy Bohan footing the $500 to win extra money race. Bohan had also been raffling off tickets to win his Street Stock (or $2,500 in cash) and gave it away at intermission. Dustin Isner took the lead at the drop of the green and built a full straight away lead by lap four. Isner continued to blister the field as for all intents and purposes the race was over by lap six. But then again that’s why they run them. Smoke began to show as Isner pulled down the backchute on lap eight. Just as he entered turn two, the engine went up in a huge ball of smoke. That handed the lead to Speck Yokum. Yokum would hold off young gun James Nelson for the win. It was the first time Yokum had drove the car in two years. J P Tallman, Samantha Rogers and Josh Mullenax filled out the top five.

Eastern Hose put up the extra money in the Good Samaritan of Barbour County Mod Lites. Just as the Street Stock finale started, the Mod Lites saw Mikey Hay shoot to the point and begin to pull away. A very scary moment happened on the lap eight. Beau Newlon flipped entering turn three five times. Thankfully Newlon will be sore, but was unhurt. When racing resumed Hay did also. With the Bicknell Racing Products / FX Rod Ends #22 on cruise, fellow Pennsylvania driver Alan Knepper had other ideas. With just two laps to go Knepper applied heavy pressure to Hay, but could not make a serious bid for the lead. Mitch Ward, Lynn Knepper and Jeff Fornash were third through fifth.

The Budweiser FASTRAK Late Models had another bout with yellow fever. After the time limit expired with some 15 cautions and only seven racing laps counted, Kris Southern driving the W V Fan Zone / Local 400 UFCW #K2 made his second trip to victory lane this year. Louie Krushansky dogged Southern but couldn’t get enough laps strung together to make a attempt for the spot. Michael Lake was third, Derek Rogers was fourth and Tracie Sampson was fifth.

Dave Defibaugh used his inside pole starting slot as his advantage and would lead flag to flag in the Fast ‘N Friendly Pharmacy Modifieds. Defibaugh held off challenges from Phil Jeffries to put his Teter Collision / D & B Motorsports #77 in victory circle for the first time in 2013. Brent Trimble climbed from eighth to finish third. He would also receive the Leggett Refrigeration Hard Charger award. Mike Murphy and Randy Bohan were fourth and fifth.

In the Darren’s Pizza Shack Mini Wedges, Logan Hitt driving the Hitt Enterprises / High Point Construction #2* added his second checkerboard to the collection the season. Olivia Ferguson, Kaitlyn Frazier, Abby Watson and Levi Nolan finished second through fifth.

This week at the Elkins Raceway is the Schaeffer Oil Budweiser FASTRAK Late Model $2000 to win, plus $500 in tools from Snap-On. With regular racing in the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models, the Fast ‘N Friendly Pharmacy Modifieds, the Miller’s Used Cars Street Stocks, the Good Samaritan of Barbour County Mod Lites and the Darren’s Pizza Shack Mini Wedges.
