With it being Kid’s Night and Fan Appreciation night and after two weeks of rain outs, Hilltop Speedway was packed full of cars and fans ready for some racing action. Dash winner Dave Hornikel and Ryan Markham would bring the Holmes Tire Late Models to the green flag with Hornikel edging into the lead as JR Gentry slid into second and would go side by side with Hornikel for the top spot and would take over the lead on lap four. As those two were racing for the lead, Markham was in a three way battle for third with fast qualifier Charlie Duncan and George Lee with Ty Myers lurking behind them. Mechanical problems for Duncan’s ride on lap nine brought out the caution flag and on the restart, Lee bolted past Markham and Hornikel for second to challenge for the lead. With Gentry and his El Campesino Restaurant,, Schaeffer Oil, and Weekley Electric #14 using the high line, Lee took to the low side of the track and could get along side of Gentry but could never get past as the two separated theirselves from the rest of the field. As Hornikel ran third, Markham would glance off the wall on lap 13 that allowed Myers and Shane McLoughlin by with Wayne Maffett Jr. passing Markham three laps later. With the laps winding down, Gentry started to pull away from Lee but as the white flag waved, the caution flew, and on the restart, Gentry of Wooster held off one last charge by Lee to get his first win of the year at Hilltop Speedway as Hornikel finished third followed by Myers with Maffett Jr. squeezing past McLoughlin on the last lap for fifth. McLoughlin, Rick Bond and Maffett Jr. won the heat races as Kyle Moore topped the last chance race.
Fast qualifier Jesse Wisecarver jumped into the lead over dash winner Vic Hottinger at the drop of the green flag of the Raceday Photo Modified main and would set a fast pace as Hottinger’s feature lasted only four laps with transmission woes. Jimmy Smith would take over second at that time with Norm Aronhalt on his tail and Robin Duston in pursuit of them. With the first 15 laps going non stop and Wisecarver building a huge lead, Aronhalt bounced off the turn one wall and dropped out of action and then Wisecarver got into the back of Beau Bradley causing Bradley to spin with Wisecarver charged with the caution and before the race went back to green, the leader pulled off with Newark’s Jimmy Smith inheriting the lead with Robin Duston second but when the race resumed, Duston would bring out the caution as his left rear tire blew. That would put John Sluka and Nathan Loney behind the #280 of Smith and when the green reappeared, Sluka and Loney made contact that allowed Mike Mizer to get by for second and on the last lap, Loney was able to hang on to third with Aaron Scott and Bradley passing a fading Sluka for top five finishes. winning the heat races were Scott and Sluka
Miamisburg’s Brandon Gardner would lead flag to flag in the Street Stock feature for the sixth time this year and giving him 44 total wins at Hilltop Speedway but a last lap caution would give Ryan Wisecarver one last chance at the win. Early in the race, Todd Swim would take second from Quinten Lewis and pester the Rowtec, Schaeffer Oil, GLR #27g of Gardner for the lead but would fall back into a three way battle with Dave Haven Jr. and John Wilson as Wisecarver and Kyle Dickinson were trying to move up. With six laps to go Wisecarver powered past Wilson and then two laps later split Swim and Haven Jr. for second. Then on the last lap restart, Gardner rebutted Wisecarver’s bid for the win as Dickinson shot past Swim and Haven Jr. to finish third. Gardner, Lewis and Swim topped the heat races
Killbuck’s Terry Adkins grabbed the lead from fellow heat winner Jordan James at the start of the Mini Stock feature and they would go bumper to bumper for the first seven laps when James banged the turn one wall ending his night. Fifth starting Jason St. John would take up the challenge at that point but could not wrestle the lead away from the #23d of Adkins, who scored his second win of the season. Gary Hensel Jr. finished third with Jerry Adkins fourth as Chris Priebe, also a heat winner, rounded out the top five.
Heat winners Cole Lillibridge and John Large would bring the Bugs-R-Gone Trucks to the start of their feature and those two would go side by side for the opening two laps when Lillibridge started to pull away and the Warsaw youngster would breeze to his sixth win of the season driving the Dillion’s Pumping Service #52. Large would lose second place for one lap to Jerry Gardner but would reclaim it to take second for the fifth time this season as Gardner settled for third followed by Kevin Potts and Tom Garlick.
Zanesville’s Tanner McLoughlin inherited the lead from Destinie Bates on lap two of the Mike’s Service Mini Wedge A-1 Feature when Bates’ wedge quit running. McLoughlin and his 2 Brothers Motorsports and McLoughlin Auto Sales #59 would check into the Hilltop Speedway victory circle for the first time this year as Billy Dawson took home second with Logan Duncan, Aiden Fritter and Jeff Dovenbarger filled out the top five. Levi Bowen set the pace for the first four circuits for the A-2 Feature but it was Millersburg’s Tristen Brown overtaking Bowen at that point to score the win as Bowen finishe d second with Brayden Renfrew, Brooke Dawson, and Zoe Stafford trailing. Bates, Billy Dawson and Blake Morris won the heat races.
Another regular night of racing with the Modlites added in is set for next Saturday, August 10th with Season Championships coming up the next week at Hilltop Speedway.
