Moler Ike Memorial Tune-Up Results 8-2-2013
4 min read8-2-13 Williamsburg, OH – With the final racing event before the biggest race of the season there was some extra money on the line for the late model feature winner. In heat race action it was Edinburgh, Indiana’s Chad Stapleton taking the win in the first heat over last week’s feature winner Jason Smith of Seymour, Indiana. In heat race #2 it was Ethan Burgess of Cincinnati taking the win over Verona, Ky’s Jesse Lay. In the Diamond Cut Lawn Care Fast car dash it was Stapleton taking the win from fourth spot and earning the pole in the feature event.
At the drop of the green flag it was Stapleton out front with Burgess in tow but the man on the move was fifth starting Duane Chamberlain who was working the extreme low side of the racetrack while the rest of the field was working the top side. Following a lap 3 caution for Kelly Lippert, who spun in turn #4 it was Stapleton still leading but Burgess, Lay, and Chamberlain had a great battle going on for second spot. By a lap 15 caution for debris in the front stretch it was Chamberlain to second spot for the restart but 3 laps later things would go south for the driver from Richmond, Indiana as he would slow and head to the pits for service. On the restart it looked as if Jesse Lay was going to be the man to mount the biggest challenge as he found a line on the outside to his liking but a lap twenty restart would do him in as he hit the turn #1 wall ending his evening. On the restart it was all Stapleton as he would pull away in his RightWay Construction, Roger’s Bar, Bowman Dodge sponsored Barry Wright Chassis machine. Burgess would come home with another second place finish with John Whitney (who started 9th) placing third with Jason Smith and Roger Ruark rounding out the top five spots.
Another exciting Chevette division feature event took place with Spensor Watson taking his third win on the season. It was not easy as Watson and Miles Tarvin started on the front row and with contact on lap two between the drivers it was Tarvin on the short end as he Rusty Yarger and Steven Pursley would spin in turn four and have to restart from the tail of the field. Following the restart Watson would have his hands full as Kyle Tarvin (who won the Diamond Cut Lawn Car Dash event) was all over Watson but would eventually succumb to mechanical issues. At the end it was Watson taking his third win with Miles Tarvin charging back to take second spot with Boog Verdon, Rusty Yarger, and Mike Clark finishing in the top five spots. Watson and Tarvin won heat races.
A large field of UMP Modifieds were on hand with 3 heat races setting the lineup for the feature. Winning heat races were Dustin Webber, .Joe Brewer, and John Rhoades. In the feature it was an exciting start as Webber, Rhoades, and fifth starting Devin Gilpin going three wide down the backstretch on lap one. On lap two Webber would spin in turn #4 to bring out the caution. On the restart it was Devin Gilpin out front with Rhoades and Dan Ebert (from Lake Shore, Minnesota) restarting out front. At the green the race would go green to checker for the final 19 laps but the action was furious as those top three would race furiously through very heavy lap traffic. Ebert would get by Rhoades for second but could not close the gap on Gilpin in the heavy traffic. Gilpin would take his 24th feature win on the season in his Dasco Race Supply, Impressive Race Chassis machine. Ebert would come home second with Rhoades, Brad Wieck, and Joe Brewer rounding out the top five.
The Compact division had its final tuneup before their biggest event of the season the King of the Compact event on Aug. 23rd. In the feature though it was all Jerry Gibson III as he would jump to the lead ahead of Trevor Landrum and lead all 15 laps enroute to his third feature win of the season. Landrum would come home second after passing TJ Dalton late while Dalton would hold on for third over Michael Hensley, and Matt Murrell. Landrum and Gibson were heat race winners. August 9th MRP will be closed in preparation for the Victor “Ike” Moler Memorial on August 16th with Late Models paying $5000 to Win, plus UMP Modifieds and Chevettes. Molerracewaypark.com
