CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-Dale Blaney, Hartford, Ohio, earned his tenth UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions main event victory of the 2015 season on Saturday night during the “Open Wheel Championship” at Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio. It was a fourth consecutive UNOH All Star victory for the GoMuddy.com, Big Game Treestands, CH Motorsports, No. 1 operation, with Blaney now increasing his career win total to 125 with the series. Blaney earned $10,000 for his “Open Wheel Championship” finale win on Saturday night.
Kerry Kinser, Bloomington, Indiana won the 305 Racesaver $1,000 payday with a narrow win over Friday night’s winner Kevin Huntley. Kenny Johnson waltzed to the AMRA Modified Precision Grading $2,000 victory.
Blaney’s combined victories Friday and Saturday boosted his weekend win total to $15,000. “The Low Rider” opened the UNOH All Star weekend with an “Open Wheel Championship” preliminary victory at Atomic Speedway on Friday night, July 31.
“I’m at a loss for words right now” said Dale Blaney, “We’ve been having a great time. Everyone involved with this race team is awesome. We’re going to try to stay competitive and keep this going. Our plan is to head to Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania Motor Speedway) tomorrow and put ourselves in another great position. We haven’t lost too many races in this car. There’s a big race coming up in a couple weeks so hopefully we can go out west and put ourselves in a good position and do the best we can.”
“The King of the Outlaws” Steve Kinser and Chillicothe, Ohio native Ryan Broughton paced the “Open Wheel Championship” starting grid to green on Saturday night. Kinser controlled the first few circuits before losing command to Wooster, Ohio’s Sheldon Haudenschild with five laps in the books. Haudenschild, who started on the outside of row two, maintained the top spot for much of the 35-lap main event.
The three-time UNOH All Star winner in 2015 navigated heavy traffic on the very rim of the speedway before being tracked down by the “Kunkletown Kid” Ryan Smith and third row starter Dale Blaney. Blaney, the all-time win leader with the UNOH All Stars, would find his mark through the middle of the speedway and work around Ryan Smith for second with 26 laps recorded. “The Low Rider” made his winning move around the outside of Sheldon Haudenschild with 32 laps on the counter.
Blaney, the defending UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions titlist and current point leader, led the remaining three circuits to earn his place back in Atomic Speedway victory lane. Ryan Smith followed Blaney around Sheldon Haudenschild in the closing laps to finish second; Haudenschild would hold on to claim the last spot on the podium. Cale Thomas and “The Bulldog” Kevin Swindell completed the top-five. There were 42 UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions sprint cars entered for action on Saturday, August 1. The entire 35-lap main event went caution free.
Rounding out the top ten were 1. 1-Dale Blaney[6] ; 2. 94-Ryan Smith[3] ; 3. 93-Sheldon Haudenschild[4] ; 4. 91-Cale Thomas[5] ; 5. 13-Kevin Swindell[7] ; 6. 22-Cole Duncan[9] ; 7. 22B-Ryan Broughton[2] ; 8. 45-Tim Shaffer[8] ; 9. 3G-James McFadden[16] ; and 10. W20-Greg Wilson[22].
Rick Fraley, West Portsmouth, Ohio flipped in the B-main but was uninjured. Greg Wilson came off the tail of the B- to finish second behind Bryan Nuckles. Wilson also charged from 22nd to 10th in the A-feature, passing the most cars of the evening.
Dale Blaney kicked off the “Open Wheel Championship” weekend at Atomic Speedway with a dominating victory on Friday night, July 31. “The Low Rider” earned the $5,000 payday after starting on the inside of the fourth row.
Kerry Kinser in the Kinser Air Filters #99 was behind the 8-ball all night long. Arriving late, he did not get to hot lap or qualify, having to start on the tail of his heat where he finished 5th. That gave him a ninth place start in the feature against a field of competitive cars from four different states.
Despite the adversity Kinser made it work.
Ethan Fleetwood, Bloomington, Indiana, was looking for the clean sweep by winning his heat and setting a new track record for the 305’s in qualifications.
Fleetwood blitzed to a healthy lead, but two cautions slowed the action in the first ten laps. After the second caution, Fleetwood’s mount was never the same.
Meanwhile, Kinser had charged from 9th to second by lap five, while Kevin Huntley, who started scratch, worked his way up to fourth. Huntley had won the second heat, but weighed in light giving the win to Kendall Ruble.
Four cars were all within twenty feet of one another battling for the win–Kinser, Danny Smith, Huntley, and Fleetwood. For five laps the quartet thrashed in seriously close quarters, jostling for position.
Smith took the lead on lap twelve with Huntley in tow, shuffling Kinser back to fourth behind Fleetwood. A lap later Huntley took the lead on the high side as Kinser moved into third. Kinser bagged Smith on lap 14 then began a six lap side by side dash with Huntley to the finish. Kinser officially led lap 17 to the finish, but Huntley was right there every inch of the way in the exciting A-main event.
Kinser’s mount was a bit retro in that his entire car body was made from clear lexan plexiglass, allowing fans to see the driver in the car and the engine under the hood. Kinser clarified his relationship to the racing Kinser clan–“I am first cousins with Kelly (Kinser) and Steve fits in there somewhere. There are a lot of us.”
“We tightened up the car between the heat and the feature and that really got us going,” noted Kinser. “I just have to thank everyone who works on the car– especially my Dad Roger– and all those who help get us here. To come to a place like this and win is a great feeling.”
Rounding out the top ten were Kerry Kinser, Kevin Huntley, Ethan Fleetwood, Danny Smith, Sean Hosey, Kendall Ruble, Mike Downs, Dustin Hammond, Robby Bartchy, and Randy Sterling.
In the 305 Racesaver second heat Cherry Hill, New Jersey driver Jeff Taylor flipped violently end-for-end ten times while challenging for the lead. Taylor was stunned but emerged after being attended to by the track emergency crew.
The AMRA Modified main was competitive in the early going, but a three-wide thread the needle pass by Kenny Johnson made the difference in the race. Johnson squirted through a small hole between Dave Pinkerton and heat winner Donnie Miller to take the lead and never look back.
“Donnie and Fireball were racing hard and really leaning on one another. A hole opened up and I went for it, but I have to say it closed fast and I was a bit puckered ’til I made it through.”
Mark Dickson tackled Pinkerton and Miller then set his sights on Johnson. Dickson for a time was the quickest car on the track, and began to close the gap, but late in the race Johnson picked up the pace and blitzed on to the easy win.
“You never know how far head you are so you keep giving it everything you have,” said Johnson. “I saw Coop (crew chief Tim Cooper) pointing to his head, so I figured he meant “be smart”. I didn’t think I was driving that wild–actually I thought we were smooth and fast.”
“Once again thanks to Brad and crew for a great race track and for all these great fans.”
Johnson has four wins this year, all at Atomic Speedway.
Rounding out the top ten were Kenny Johnson, Mark Dickson, Donnie Miller, Greggie Oliver, Travis Dickson, Dave Fireball Pinkerton, John Burdette, James Dennis, and Jimmy Lennex.
